Position Overview:
Reporting to the Band Manager, the Community Social Worker (CSW) is responsible for improving the overall health and social outcomes for DRFN members by providing high-quality health and social development programs and services for DRFN families, youth, and children in a culturally sensitive manner. The Community Social Worker (CSW) will practice in accordance with the standards, scope, and code of ethics as outlined by the Ministry of Children and Families (MCFD). As part of the Health and Social Development department, the CSW’s activities will be in alignment with DRFN’s Comprehensive Community Plan (CCP).
These plans will be achieved by participating in the planning, organizing, leading, and delivery of activities as funded by the Ministry of Children and Families and band own source revenues. Work activities are divided between the office, meeting with community members, service providers, and government departments.
The CSW must have excellent organizational skills and be able to handle a large and varied workload with competing priorities. Additionally, they must work to increase the potential and credibility of the DRFN health and social development department with governments, local service providers, and other First Nations and advocate partnerships for family-wellness initiatives. Further, they will assist community members in navigating local, provincial, and federal systems for services for families, youth, and children.
The CSW will be the pivotal point of contact for families, children, and youth at DRFN, serving as the resource person to whom members, health and social service providers, staff, elected leaders, and outside organizations go for advice and guidance on family wellness, services, and activities. The CSW will strive to form beneficial working relationships within DRFN and with a variety of service providers and care partners. A key function is to act as a communication interface with MCFD, and health and social care providers and act as an advocate for DRFN members within the Nation and external agencies.
The CSW must be prepared to travel occasionally, according to the needs of the community and government service providers.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited institution.
- Current registration and in good standing with the British Columbia College of Social Workers (BCCSW) or equivalent professional body from another province.
- Minimum of 3 – 5 years experience in providing social work services to Indigenous communities, with an understanding of Indigenous culture, history, and practices.
- Ability to integrate traditional and contemporary approaches in social work practice.
- Experience with case coordination and/or case management involving indigenous communities in a culturally safe manner.
- Experience in promoting best practices in Indigenous health and social work.
- Experience working in a fast-paced and evolving environment with a concentration in health and social work.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trusting relationships and communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
- Empathy, compassion, and non-judgmental attitude towards clients and their unique circumstances.
- Experience in crisis intervention and trauma-informed care.
Compensation:
- A competitive starting salary ranging between $80,000 – $95,000 per year
