Position Overview:

The Director of Care is responsible for directing, implementing and evaluating the delivery of care services for the health and well-being of residents based upon legislative and regulatory standards, and company policies and procedures. The DOC will report to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

Plans, directs and supervises health care programs for Residents: 

  • Conducts nursing assessments of potential and existing residents to ensure appropriate level of care, and refer to alternative providers where appropriate.
  • Ensures compliance with all Federal and Provincial regulations, and follows the standards as set out by the provincial licensing body responsible for credentialing nurses.
  • Ensures the creation and maintenance of a Care Plan for all Residents.
  • Meets with the Residents and families to resolve problems and concerns and adjust care plans to address the needs presented.
  • Coordinates health care activities with family practitioners and other health care service providers.
  • Ensures that the nutritional needs of the Residents are met in connection with the Residents’ care plans.
  • Coordinates and promotes rehabilitation and restorative measures.
  • Oversees, monitors and delivers the drug administration programs for Residents, including control and safekeeping of narcotics, liaison with pharmacy provider, and conducts quality assurance audits.
  • Implementation and ongoing monitoring of an infection control program.
  • Organize and present (multidisciplinary when required) care conferences for residents and POA (if applicable).

Oversees and manages the staff responsible for providing resident health care services:

  • Hires, orientates, and manages performance of Care staff; oversees students as required.
  • Creates and adjusts staff schedules for optimum levels of quality care.
  • Coordinates and/or provides training, orientation and in-service education for all staff.
  • Enforce and adhere to all appropriate workplace regulations, compliances, legislation and Company policies and procedures, including company dress code.

Administrative:

  • Prepares and monitors departmental goals and objectives, reports, budgets and correspondence as necessary.
  • Ensures optimum capture of revenue following Company policies and procedures.
  • Oversees the creation and maintenance of nursing and medical files for all Residents.
  • Participates actively in all Health and Safety, Fire and Quality Assurance programs.
  • Organize and chair regular department meetings.
  • Assumes duties as required in the absence of the Executive Director and acts as weekend Manager on Duty on a rotational schedule.

Qualifications:

  • Maintains a current registration as a Nurse with the provincial licensing body responsible for credentialing of nurses.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience, including seniors` rehabilitation.
  • In depth knowledge of the Retirement Homes Act and regulations.
  • Excellent command of the English language, both oral and written.
  • Maintains a current CPR/First Aid certificate.
  • Can think outside the box and implement ideas to enhance the job and someone who can create a structure for the team that empowers them but someone who is available and supportive.
  • Someone who is committed and dedicated to their job and the residents within the home.
