Position Overview:
Reporting to the General Manager, the Director of Care (DOC) provides dedicated clinical leadership within a retirement residence setting, ensuring the consistent delivery of safe, respectful, and resident-focused care. The DOC plays a pivotal role in managing nursing operations, overseeing staff supervision, care planning, medication administration, and regulatory compliance, while fostering a compassionate, team-oriented environment.
This role is accountable for assessing resident needs, implementing individualized care programs, and maintaining accurate documentation in accordance with nursing standards and applicable legislation. The DOC leads the nursing team through guidance, mentorship, and performance management, while also coordinating with physicians, families, and other departments to ensure holistic resident well-being. As a steward of quality, safety, and staff development, the DOC supports continuous improvement and fosters a workplace culture rooted in dignity, responsiveness, and clinical excellence.
Responsibilities:
The Director of Care is responsible for delivering professional nursing care to all residents and supervising the clinical care team to ensure safe, person-centred service. This includes assessing resident needs, developing and evaluating individualized care plans, and maintaining high standards of clinical practice in alignment with regulatory requirements. The DOC collaborates closely with the General Manager, attending physicians, food services, sales, and recreation teams to support holistic care. In this leadership role, the DOC provides direct supervision, guidance, and mentorship to Personal Support Workers (PSWs), Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), and Unregulated Care Providers (UCPs), fostering a culture of clinical excellence, accountability, and respectful communication. Responsibilities also include oversight of medication management, incident reporting, infection prevention, staff scheduling, and documentation compliance with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and legislative standards.
Qualifications:
- Current registration as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a supervisory or leadership role within a retirement or long-term care setting
- Demonstrated knowledge of care planning, medication administration, and regulatory compliance
- Strong working knowledge of the Retirement Homes Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, and CNO documentation standards
- CPR/First Aid certification; EMAR/Yardi software experience is an asset
- Proven leadership, communication, and team coordination skills
