Position Overview:

Reporting to the Health and Wellbeing Manager, the Community Social Worker (CSW) plays a critical role in supporting the holistic wellness of Doig River First Nation (DRFN) members by delivering culturally grounded, trauma-informed, and family-centered social and health development services. Guided by the values of the Nation and the standards of the BC College of Social Workers (BCCSW), the CSW will uphold best practices in Indigenous health and social work.

As a key member of the Health and Social Development Department, the CSW will support the implementation of DRFN’s Comprehensive Community Plan (CCP) by engaging in program design, case coordination, advocacy, and culturally safe service delivery. The CSW will work closely with children, youth, and families to navigate complex care systems and promote meaningful connections to health, education, and community resources.

This position requires strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, evolving environment. The CSW will act as a liaison between DRFN members and external agencies, including the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), provincial health authorities, and Indigenous service organizations.

The CSW will also serve as a trusted resource for community members, staff, and leadership—building respectful, supportive relationships while championing DRFN’s vision for family wellness and cultural continuity. Regular collaboration with care providers, Elders, and frontline professionals is essential to ensuring integrated and responsive services.

The role involves both in-office responsibilities and community outreach, with occasional travel to meet with members, attend regional events, and coordinate inter-agency services. The CSW must demonstrate empathy, discretion, and professionalism in all aspects of their work.

Qualifications:

Education & Professional Registration

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Health Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Current registration and in good standing with the BC College of Social Workers (BCCSW) or an equivalent regulatory body from another Canadian province.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and clear Criminal Record Check.
  • First Aid Level 1 certification (preferred).

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in health or social work roles, including direct service to Indigenous communities, with an emphasis on children, youth, and families.
  • Demonstrated experience in case coordination and culturally safe case management within Indigenous contexts.
  • Proven ability to develop and evaluate programs, write grants and reports, and manage budgets.
  • Skilled in trauma-informed practice and crisis response.

Knowledge

  • Deep understanding of Indigenous health and wellness models, particularly within Treaty 8 and the Dane-zaa context.
  • Familiarity with the BC social services landscape and provincial/federal Indigenous health policies, including UNDRIP and Jordan’s Principle.
  • Knowledge of First Nations’ social determinants of health, cultural safety, and population health frameworks.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust, foster relationships, and collaborate with families, Elders, and external service providers.
  • Effective communicator with well-developed oral and written communication skills, including report writing and community engagement.
  • Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, and professionalism in managing sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

 Compensation:

  • A competitive starting salary ranging between $80,000 – $95,000 per year
