Food Service Manager – Retirement Living

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Food Service Manager will advance the Dietary program through service excellence, innovation and leadership. You will provide operational expertise and direction to support high quality hospitality, nutrition care and food services. You will also ensure the effective and efficient preparation and delivery of food to the residents within legislative and budgetary requirements. You are an energetic, strategic thinker that is able to work in partnership with all stakeholders to ensure a co-ordinated approach to care and service that is resident and client centred.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages the development, delivery and performance of the food services program ensuring that applicable legislative guidelines and expectations are followed.
  • Directs and oversees all functional areas of operation within Dietary services including development of cost effective detailed plans, policy and menu development.
  • Liaises with the Director of Care on the nutritional assessment of residents as well as the Director of Recreation and/Community Relations for special events
  • Ensures food is prepared in accordance with health guidelines, including administering regular testing for quality assurance.
  • Participates in HR duties, including recruitment, organizing staff orientation and in-service training, scheduling, conducting regular performance reviews, and assisting in staff development and coaching, in an environment that encourages open communication.
  • Ensures a hands-on approach by meeting with residents regularly to assess/discuss food service needs and preference.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with key stakeholders (vendors, Canadian Society of Nutrition Managers/College of Dieticians of Ontario, Toronto Public Health)

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience in dietary management, with hotel, restaurant, retirement or long-term care experience an asset.
  • Red Seal Certification preferred.
  • Previous experience with leadership best practices and principles, in a fast-paced unionized environment
  • Strong knowledge of financial management practices and budget processes.
  • Comfortable with various computer applications, including Microsoft Office, electronic systems.
  • Must have knowledge of relevant legislations, regulations and codes such as RHRA guidelines, Food Handlers’ Certification, Human Rights Act, Employment Standards Act, Collective agreements.
  • Must be familiar with all applicable health and safety legislation (Occupational Health and Safety Act), have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff.
