Position Overview:

The Dental Hygienists within this dental practice are responsible both legally and ethically, for the assessment, DH Diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of dental hygiene programs required for individual client’s needs. This responsibility is completed in conjunction with input from the dentist, the client, and the dental hygienist. In effecting these responsibilities, dental hygienists within this dental practice are aware of and comply with all relevant regulations, legislation, and ethical guidelines related to the practice of dental hygiene.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Diploma in dental hygiene from a provincially accredited school of dental hygiene
  • Registration as a dental hygienist in Ontario (CDHO)
  • Ability to effectively communicate and establish professional / working relationships with DDS, team and clients

Position Overview:

The Dental Hygienists within this dental practice are responsible both legally and ethically, for the assessment, DH Diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of dental hygiene programs required for individual client’s needs. This responsibility is completed in conjunction with input from the dentist, the client, and the dental hygienist. In effecting these responsibilities, dental hygienists within this dental practice are aware of and comply with all relevant regulations, legislation, and ethical guidelines related to the practice of dental hygiene.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Charting:
  • Review and update medical and dental histories
  • Obtain informed consent for treatment
  • Evaluate and record hard/soft tissue conditions
  • Record periodontal findings – in full yearly (pockets, furcations, mobilities, minimal attachments, bleeding points)
  • PSR for clients 14+ years
  • Record recommended treatment (for both periodontal and restorative needs)
  • Review and update client behavioural form (wants, needs, goals etc)
Clinical Procedures:
  • Digital radiographs to be taken as prescribed by DDS
  • Dispense antibacterial pre-procedural rinses
  • Provide oral cancer screening
  • Periodontal debridement using both ultrasonic tips and handscalers
  • Selective Prophylaxis
  • Fluoride application
  • Placement of pit and fissure sealants
  • Placement of desensitizing agent
  • Take alginate impressions
  • Irrigation therapy
  • Administration of periodontal gel anaesthetic (Oraqix)
  • Be aware of office emergency protocol
  • Follow standards of infection control
Client Education:
  • OHI for individual client needs including instruction in dental home care and various dental aids (with use of disclosing agent as needed)
  • Discussion and explanation of periodontal conditions
  • Discussion and assessment of client risk factors
  • Discussion and explanation of correlation between oral health and overall general health
  • Discuss smoking cessation
  • Nutrition analysis (when applicable)
  • Discuss and present periodontal treatment options
  • Discuss restorative needs in conjunction with DDS and Treatment Co-ordinator
  • Use intra-oral camera to facilitate diagnosis made by the dentist
  • Work with the Doctors to understand their restorative philosophy, and prompt them with the transfer of information when they assess the client
  • Work with the Treatment Co-ordinator to provide client specific treatment plans to meet their needs for optimal oral health and for any financial arrangements
Maintenance:
  • Instrumentation selection and sharpening
  • Sterilization of instruments
  • Ensure all operatory equipment is in good working order
  • Restocking
  • Run suction lines with enzymatic cleaner and record in logging monitor
Administrative:
  • Attend daily strategy meetings 10 minutes before schedule begins to review charts (pre-med recommendations, discuss any health concerns, review previous orders for radiographs, outstanding treatment, etc)
  • Complete monthly monitors and hand in to office manager by the end of the month
  • Review and audit charts before each day
