Position Overview:

The General Manager is responsible for leadership, administration and management of the day to day non-care related services. the General Manager is accountable for key performance improvements for overall operations within the communities including budget, maintenance, managing expenses, increasing revenue, occupancy, meeting Accommodation Standards, PIR Standards (elements), and building a high-performance team (housekeeping, maintenance, food services, and administrative) within the communities.
The General Manager will be accountable for managing the image, profile, and reputation in the community and with appropriate stakeholders.
Within the scope of this position, the General Manager plays a key leadership role to provide and ensure an environment that promotes a culture of client safety and exemplary service.


  • Inspires and fosters a collaborative team who understands and promotes the Community’s Mission, Vision and Values.
  • Responsible for the development, prioritization and implementation of the Community’s business planning goals.
  • Leads all staff effectively by understanding and relating to the diversity of the Community’s workforce; collaboratively works with the Care Leader/Coordinator to resolve any conflict issues while always maintaining a harmonious working environment.
  • Affirms that the Community operates and provides services in compliance with all applicable local, provincial and federal laws, regulations, and codes and within accepted professional standards and principles that apply to professionals providing services in the Community.
  • Ensures that the Community maintains its license to operate in accordance with applicable provincial and local laws.
  • Collaborates with and acts in the absence of the department managers to give leadership and support to the operations of the Community.
  • Ensures the Community is prepared for all regulatory audits, inclusive of the Alberta Continuing Care and Accommodation Standard.
  • Meets with Community staff on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Reviews and manages the resolution of complaints and grievances made or filed by Community personnel; responds to the complaint or grievance in accordance with policy and procedures.
  • Ensures that each department manager has, in conjunction with the In-service Educator, established and implemented an efficient orientation program that introduces new employees to the facility, its policies, procedures and practices, and to their job description and duties.
  • Provides leadership training to department managers and other designated staff that shall include essential administrative and supervisory principles and required practices.
  • Oversees that the approved budget is managed in accordance with the Community’s guidelines and decisions, is accountable for any variance in budget and managing costs within budget parameters.
  • Ensures client care funds, maintained by the Community, are managed in accordance with the client’s request and federal and provincial requirements; ensures client amounts are paid monthly.
  • Continuously demonstrates a proactive approach to manage spending; being innovative in creating strategies that will reduce costs while not diminishing care or services provided.
  • Strives to operate a fiscally sound and efficient Community.
  • Confirms that all Community resources are utilized effectively and efficiently.
  • Ensures staff are accountable for areas of responsibilities and meeting financial and services targets.
  • Develops, reviews and monitors all non-care operating budgets and ensures the highest level of fiscal stewardship and innovation regarding the use of resources.


  • University Degree in Business Administration or Hospitality Management an asset; or Bachelor of Science in Nursing or nursing diploma and practicing membership with the BCCNM or CARNA.
  • 3+ years of leadership experience in a health care environment and in an administrative management capacity directly supervising and/or managing employees. Senior’s retirement Facility experience will be considered an asset but is not required.
  • 3+ years managing operations and facilities.
  • Proven ability to direct and manage staff of 15 people or more including senior supervisory level staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and outstanding customer service skills.
  • Strong ability to manage diversity of work force; resolve any conflict issues, and maintain a harmonious working environment.
