Environmental Supervisor, Long Term Care

Position Overview:

The Environmental Supervisor will be responsible for performing general building and property maintenance under the direction of the Executive Director. This position requires someone who is willing to work hands-on as well as lead and direct the staff that report to the position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete scheduling and payroll for Maintenance, Laundry and Housekeeping departments.
  • Provide emergency/unscheduled repairs of Home’s equipment and perform scheduled maintenance repairs.
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service.
  • Diagnose problems, replace or repair parts, test and make adjustments.
  • Perform regular preventive maintenance on machines, equipment and home’s facilities.
  • Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas.
  • Set priorities for preventative maintenance work orders, maintenance requisitions and scheduled work.
  • Adhere to departmental procedures and systems, e.g., “systems for preventative maintenance”, “maintenance requisitions”, scheduled work and continued quality improvement/risk management programs.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain various electrical components, appliances and equipment in accordance with pertinent codes, the preventative maintenance program and departmental procedures.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance checks of all electrical alarms.
  • Troubleshoot, install, and repair plumbing fixtures, piping, and related equipment.
  • Perform mechanical and preventative maintenance work on equipment as per preventative maintenance manual, e.g., circulating pumps, air handling systems, and refrigeration etc.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned or needed.
  • Understands and promotes the Residents Bill of Rights and supports resident well-being.
  • Promotes a home like environment for residents.
  • Is responsible for proper safety and care of equipment used in providing services to residents. Follows the established reporting procedure to report unsafe equipment or hazardous situations.
  • Assumes responsibility for effective waste management, pest control, water supply, water temperature, air quality, housekeeping, laundry and maintenance services. Participates in home’s disaster and emergency planning in collaboration with local and emergency planning groups. Under the direction and leadership of the Executive Director coordinates activities in the event of an internal/external disaster.
  • Hires, orientates, schedules, supervises, terminates.
  • Ensures that all products are labeled and safely stored in accordance with WHMIS standards and suppliers information.
  • Maintains inventories of departmental supplies ensuring adequate quantities are available (housekeeping, laundry, maintenance).
  • Ensures maintenance services are regularly provided including, internal and external painting, furniture refinishing and repair and service and repairs to home systems such as: heating, cooling, domestic water, electrical, plumbing.
  • Ensures maintenance of grounds, parking areas, and walkways including grounds upkeep, landscaping, snow removal and grass cutting.

Background/Qualifications:

  • Previous management experience. Demonstrated ability to supervise staff.
  • Must have background which includes basic electrical, mechanical, carpentry and plumbing experience.
  • Must have knowledge of building code and fire code as pertains to long term care facilities.
  • Must have knowledge of fire equipment, sprinkler system, suppression system, and inspection/servicing/testing requirements.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in proper laundry procedures, chemicals and linen care.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in proper housekeeping procedures.
  • Must possess good oral and written skills.
