Position Overview:

The Director of Care (DOC) is accountable to the Executive Director for the overall management of the nursing department and resident care services. Through effective management of all resources in the nursing envelope and development of a strong nursing team, the DOC will ensure the delivery of optimal care and service, based on legislative requirements and The Salvation Army Eventide standards.
The DOC is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the Salvation Army Eventide’s core values and ethics, ensure resident safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence while responsible for planning, implementation and evaluation of holistic care programs and services provided to the residents. The programs include nursing, personal care, social work, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and other medical services. The DOC is also responsible for liaison with external agencies/consultants including clinical outreach team, pharmacy, laboratories, local community colleges, LHIN, physicians, other health care services and providers including acute and long-term care.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the supervision of the care of the Residents and staff of Eventide Home; ensures the daily operations of the nursing care of the Residents are fulfilled
  • Supports the philosophy of the Nursing Department and of The Salvation Army Eventide Home
  • Provides coaching, leadership, training and management of over 50 direct and indirect employees
  • Assumes general overall supervision of the Home in the absence of the Executive Director
  • Assists the with the hiring, disciplining and performance management of staff
  • Meets routinely with Nursing Program(s) designates; oversee the evaluation of all Annual Mandatory Nursing Services Programs
  • Designs, implements, monitors, evaluates outcome of infection control program and follows up with necessary actions
  • Responsible for: overseeing the development of individualized resident care plans which are coordinated with all members of the Interdisciplinary Team; budget and financial control of Nursing Department; development of policy and procedures that meet existing legislative and regulatory requirements and professional standards of practice; and facility Infection and Control Program
  • A strategic leader: a member of senior management team in planning, implementation and evaluation of facility-wide quality improvement/risk management activities. Provides oversight on report development, attends meetings of the Board upon request
  • Attends Administrative Executive Committee and Continuous Quality Improvement / Risk Management (CQI/RM) Board Committee meetings on a regular basis
  • Contributes to Executive Board meetings
  • Oversees the established system of resident reassessment; ensure documentation is current, accurate and reflective of the resident plan of care: modelling, teaching, mentoring, coaching, auditing and report generating
  • Ensures all reports and statements required from the nursing department are prepared, accurate and available for quarterly reporting
  • Responsible for all resident’s safety; reports and conducts investigations of unsafe practices, resident abuse, or professional misconduct, documents incidents as per Facility/The college of Nurses Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
  • Reviews Nursing reports daily; provide status update to the Charge Nurse as necessary
  • Replaces staff to ensure adequate shift coverage in the absence of the scheduler
  • Assesses/Provides feedback, identifies educational needs for staff within the area of best practices; ensures regulatory compliance; develops/delivers educational sessions to meet standards of The College of Nurses Ontario
  • Audits/analyzes benchmark indicators with Continuous Quality Improvement Coordinator; participates in Annual Health Quality Ontario QIP and quarterly PAC (Professional Advisory Committee) meetings
  • Prepares reports to validate statistical information, respective committees and community boards
  • Maintains medical records according to professional standards of the College of Nurses Ontario
  • Routinely communicates with Registered and Unregistered Care Providers to review/adjust daily schedules as necessary
  • Ensures all communication with residents/families is carried out in a sensitive compassionate manner and adapts mode of communication to facilitate effective interaction in all activities
  • Monitors units to identify and follow up on resident risk/adjust daily routines as necessary
  • Participates with internal/external committees
  • Provides input into in preparing the departmental budget

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
  • University Degree, BScN is essential, Masters in Health Science or related fields an asset
  • Current Certificate of Registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario and current CPR certification
  • Post RN education in Gerontology an asset
Experience and Knowledge Requirements:
  • Minimum of three (3) years of prior related experience, including gerontology, supervisory, program planning, education delivery
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a Long-Term Care residence
  • Previous experience managing staff
  • Previous experience managing and creating a budget
  • Knowledgeable in the current Standards of Practice established by the College of Nurses
  • Knowledge of MOHLTCA/On Reg 79/10 legislation, to ensure systems/processes accurate to sustain compliance
