Assistant Director of Nursing, Registered Nurse,
North York, Ontario

 OVERVIEW:

The Assistant Director of Nursing in this 249-bed home is responsible for the overall provision of care and services to residents, coordination of the quality management program and acts as a resource and coach to staff in various clinical areas as outlined in the position summary. In conjunction with the Director of Nursing and the Staff Educator, the Assistant Director of Nursing ensures compliance with legislative requirements (MOHLTC and CNO) and act as a coach to the nursing staff to ensure best practices are followed.
 
This is an excellent introductory role into management in long term care. You will be part of a cohesive group of 3 Assistant Director of Care’s in a busy long term care home.
You will work closely with a very resourceful team including the Director of Care, a Special Projects Nurse, RAI MDS Coordinators, a Staff Development Coordinator, and a Staffing Coordinator for the nursing department as well as a Quality Lead.
The shift is Monday to Friday, 15:00 to 23:00, with no weekends and no “on call”.

 RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides direction to the nursing team in all aspects of resident care, and takes on the role of “In Charge” in the absence of DON and/or Administrator.
  • Assists with the recruitment, retention and termination of nursing employee.
  • Adheres to the collective agreement when implementing human resources policies.
  • Has a good understanding of staffing patterns, and scheduling patterns.
  • Counsels staff in areas of non-compliance, inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour. Utilizes the progressive disciplinary process when disciplining employees.
  • Monitors supply budgets to ensure that these are being effectively managed.
  • Follows through on HIN issues.
  • Able to diffuse conflicts effectively and is solution oriented.
  • Follows through on areas/issues identified through the QI program.
  • Conducts regular clinical chart audits to ensure compliance with documentation standards, internal policies and procedures, and legislative requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Current RN certificate of competency from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Comprehensive knowledge of evidence based clinical practices
  • Comprehensive knowledge of long-term care concepts and philosophies
  • Excellent Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Solid long-term care experience
  • Previous managerial experience in a long-term care setting and asset
