Their focus is on providing a high level of resident care with positive family and community involvement.  Fairfield Park is currently seeking an Assistant Director of Care to join their team.

Position Overview:

In collaboration with the Director of Care, the ADOC (Registered Nurse) manages all aspects of nursing care within the Home to ensure the safe and effective delivery of established standards of resident care within legislative and budgetary requirements.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Interprets nursing philosophy and establishes and implements goals, objectives, policies and procedures in compliance with regulatory requirements and assists in reviewing & updating every Accreditation cycle and as changes in best practice dictate. Interprets policies and procedures to nursing staff, residents, families, medical staff, other departments or service providers as required.
  • Assists in the recruitment, supervision and motivation of nursing staff. Monitors and evaluates performance to assure a high level of productivity, the best use of capabilities, and to ensure the facility’s nursing objectives are being met.
  • Participates in establishing staffing patterns, job routines and work schedules. Monitors and effects changes as necessary, responding to staff needs and encouraging teamwork.
  • Assists in training & educating nursing staff. Encourages professional growth and development of all nursing personnel. Ensures compliance of nursing staff with mandatory education/training.
  • Assists RN/RPN supervisors/nursing staff in developing and implementing holistic resident care plans; solving personnel grievances and problems; providing orientation and in-services; conducting staff meetings.
  • Lead on infection control practices and related staff education, as per best practices and Public Health directives. Assists with pandemic planning.
  • Maintains direct resident contact and involvement in resident care. Reviews resident reports/records and makes rounds on a regular basis.
  • Ensures that resident and family needs are addressed and any concerns are handled and brought to the attention of the DOC.
  • Assists in monitoring the Continuous Quality Improvement program and evaluates nursing and related services to improve quality of resident care based on existing best practices.
  • Monitors compliance through audit of the home, care assessments, resident charts, care plans, MARS/TARS & other types of documentation.
  • Participates and assists in the admission process for new residents.
  • Assists in developing an annual operating budget consistent with the overall fiscal objectives of the Home and ensures that space, supplies and capital equipment are sufficient for delivering nursing care services.
  • Ensures department records, reports and statistics are maintained for both residents and department personnel in accordance with legislative requirements and facility policies.
  • Ensures that fire and safety procedures and regulations are followed.
  • Chairs and/or participates on committees related to resident care, infection control, Accreditation and overall leadership to contribute positively to the overall operation of the facility.
  • Liaises and consults with inspectors and professionals in relation to the needs/care of residents.
  • Assumes responsibility for the nursing department in the absence of the Director of Care.

Health & Safety Responsibilities:

  • Is aware of the employee’s and supervisor’s responsibilities under the OH&S Act and complies with all health & safety policies and procedures as set out in the employee safety program handbook and department manuals.
  • Takes every reasonable precaution for the protection of the workers.
  • Advise workers of any potential or actual health and safety hazards present in the workplace and ensure workers work in a manner required by the OH&S Act and Regulations.
  • Provide instruction, information, education and training to all workers, contractors and visitors to ensure compliance and safety.
  • Does not operate or use faulty equipment.
  • Ensure employees proper use of personal protective equipment (or clothing) as required by task, M.S.D.S. or facility policy.
  • Participates in fire safety demonstrations and fire drills, and knows the facility fire and disaster plan.


  • Current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario, and in good standing.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing and health care practices and techniques including courses or experience in long-term care.
  • Previous managerial experience in a long term care setting and knowledge of applicable legislation.
  • Proficient computer skills and excellent human relations and communication skills required to handle a variety of interactions with residents, families, staff and the public.
