Nurse Consultant

  • Has received a grant from the Centre for Aging and Brain Health to study virtual reality applications in moderate to severe dementia

Key Areas of Responsibility Include:


  • Review new and existing Ministry of Health and Long Term Care policy
  • Develop and revise relevant policies, procedures and processes to meet legislative requirements and industry standards (MOHLTC and the College of Nurses of Ontario, etc) and monitor adherence to them
  • Ensure management and staff are knowledgeable and operate within legislative requirements
  • Ensure homes are attaining a Best Practice environment (Implement RNAO BPGs and Butterfly Model of Care)


  • Implements vision for resident care and services supporting the resident centered Model of Care
  • Provides support to the RAI coordinator and works closely with the DOCs, ADOCs, and direct care staff
  • Participates in Risk Management activities including review of staff and resident incident reports and complaints/concerns, monthly indicators, survey data, audits, Quality Protocols, MOHLTC inspection reviews, Public Health inspections, Ministry of Labour inspections and Accreditation reports
  • Acts as resource to all homes to develop best practice setting for all disciplines
  • Responds to requests from Residents’ and Family Councils

Education & Training:

  • Ensure mandatory orientation, education and training for staff to meet legislative requirements, professional and corporate mandates
  • Assist homes to provide inservices and education

Infection Control:

  • Participate in committees/teams/task forces related to infection control representing the corporate position
  • Consult on prevention, outbreaks and control issues with all homes

Health & Safety:

  • Ensures nursing department complies with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and any Collective Agreements
  • Ensures staff are knowledgeable related to the Occupational Health & Safety Act

Administration & Supervision:

  • Assess committee and team structures to ensure effectiveness
  • Assist Homes to develop high performing teams
  • Assist homes to develop solutions/interventions regarding resident programs
  • Liaise and consult with Ministry Officials and professional associations representing the corporate position
  • Review Models of Care and ensure staffing models support the delivery of safe and effective resident care
  • Act as a clinical resource to homes consulting in areas of resident care and services including RAI-MDS documentation
  • Participate or lead new projects or undertakings as assigned (e.g., the RNAO BPSO project)
  • Develop an annual plan of clinical projects and manage the projects


  • 5 years progressive related experience (including previous DOC experience)
  • Certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a registered nurse, in good standing
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing; Master of Science in Nursing preferred
  • CPR Certificate
  • Certification in Gerontology and current membership with RNAO and GNA is desirable
  • Knowledge and experience with CIHI CCRS data and RAI/MDS. RAI/MDS training and certification required
  • Knowledge of the Point Click Care and Enquire software preferred for auditing and monitoring HQO quality indicator performance
  • Knowledge and experience with adult education strategies/facilitation
  • RNAO BPSO experience or having worked in an RNAO best-practice spotlight organization preferred
  • Additional education in nursing, nursing administration and gerontology an asset
  • Demonstrates an understanding of current trends and concepts relative to professional nursing
