Director of Care, Fort Frances, Ontario

Situated on Hwy #11-71, Fort Frances is conveniently located on the shore of Rainy Lake, at a border crossing neighbouring International Falls, MN. Fort Frances is centrally located to three major centers including Thunder Bay (347 km east) Winnipeg, Manitoba (370 km west), and Minneapolis, MN (475 km south).


Riverside Health Care (RHC) is a fully accredited multi-site, multi-faceted health care system providing service to the Rainy River District in beautiful Northwestern Ontario. Our vision is to provide exceptional and compassionate health care, inspired by the people we serve, valued by our communities. RHC health care sites across the District are located in the communities of Rainy River, Emo, and Fort Frances and serve a catchment area of over 20,000 residents in 15,500 square kilometers. Rainycrest is a 164-bed long term care home located in Fort Frances, and is one of 3 Riverside Health Care sites that offer long term care.

Under the supervision of the Vice President of Long Term Care and Senior Services (Administrator), the Director of Care for Rainycrest is responsible to plan, organize, control and evaluate the delivery of nursing services to meet resident nursing and personal care needs within a multidisciplinary team environment.


  • Provide direct supervision to the Registered Nurses and direction and leadership to all staff within the nursing department.
  • Manage human resources through a collaborative approach with corporate Human Resources, employees and unions.
  • Develop annual goals and objectives consistent with mission and strategic direction of the organization.
  • Develop and evaluate policies and procedures in accordance with the LTCHA, College of Nurses Standards and other Provincial legislation.
    Develop and oversee the implementation of ‘best practices’ and Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives to ensure quality resident care and staff satisfaction.
  • Provide coordination and support for medical and pharmacy services programs.
  • Coordinate the admission process in collaboration with the NWCCAC
    Oversee the RAI program for the Corporation.
  • Organize education/training initiatives promoting nursing professional development and continuing education.
  • Assess and evaluate the nursing service programs ensuring compliance with Provincial standards and legislations.
  • Statistical analysis of quality care data for benchmarking/comparison of indicators to other facilities in the industry.
  • Work in partnership with Corporate in the development of the annual operating and capital budget ensuring adequate staffing and resources within nursing envelope.
  • Participate and/or lead committees as required.
  • Maintain a liaison with hospital, medical staff, community and health care related disciplines and partners to ensure the most effective provision of care delivery in the facility.
  • Collaborate with the Administrator for resolution of ethical issues through the Ethics Committee.
  • Carry out work assignments safely and in compliance with relevant regulations, policies and procedures (ie. Occupational Health and Safety Act).
  • In the absence of the Administrator, assumes responsibility for the administration of the Home.
  • Performs other such duties or responsibilities as delegated or assigned.


  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, current registration with the Ontario College of Nurses
  • Demonstrated knowledge of nursing clinical care and gerontology
  • 3 years relevant supervisory experience, preferably in LTC
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of LTCHA and regulations and the College of Nurses standards,
  • Highly effective leadership, facilitation, presentation, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build effective relationships and work productively in a team environment
  • Ability to effectively manage a multi-disciplinary staff in an unionized environment
  • Advanced working knowledge of the internet, MS Office, specifically Excel and Word. RAI-MDS 2.0 experience an asset
  • Knowledge of and experience with financial management and expenditure control preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations
