Director of Care, Registered Nurse, St. Catharines, Ontario

COMPANY OVERVIEW

The Home is a gorgeous, newer, state of the art facility, located in the heart of St. Catharines, within a well established neighbourhood community. This Home boasts excellent facilities, superb social, spiritual, recreational and therapeutic programs for seniors, and dedicated nurses and support staff.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Care (DOC) is directly responsible to the Administrator for the management and leadership of resident care and services within a 160 bed Long-Term Care Home. This position will ensure adherence to the respective regulations and legislation in the Ontario Long Term Care Homes Act and Regulations as well as the Resident’s Bill of Rights, the standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the Home’s mission and policies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Care, RN will provide leadership and direction to the Assistant Director of Care, the team of Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, and Unit Clerk. This role will also ensure policies and procedures, budgeting and financial management, employee relations, quality improvement, health and safety as well as WSIB management. The DOC will also encourage, coordinate and ensure employee development through staff education, training and in-services.

Key working relationships include:
Within the Home: Residents and their families, all staff, physicians, allied health professionals, service providers, visitors, volunteers, and students
Within the Company: Managing Director and colleagues
Outside the Company: Community Colleges and Universities, other skill-centered schools, CCAC, MOHLTC, MOL, Public Health Unit, Suppliers, etc.

Essential Skills include: communication (listening, oral, presentation and written), leadership, analytical decision making and problem-solving skills. Negotiating, assertiveness, objectivity, budgeting, organizing and planning. Comprehensive knowledge of nursing and health care practices and techniques, conflict management abilities and mediation skills

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3 years experience as a Director of Care or at least 5 years of progressive related experience
  • Certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a registered nurse, in good standing
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or equivalent preferred
  • Certification in Gerontology is desirable
  • Current membership with GNA and RNAO
  • Knowledge and experience with RAI/MDS. RAI/MDS training and certification preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with adult education strategies/facilitation
  • Additional education in nursing, nursing administration, and gerontology an asset
